Creativity and New Media




While technology in regards to social media and social interactions has provided unimaginable returns in the past decade, communicating through social media has proven to be difficult. As emotions and other intangibles are hard to detect and in some cases, words that are a sufficient channel of communication, social media platforms are producing and promoting supplements to text in order to provide better exposure to emotions. For this blog post assignment, I have set up a Bitmoji on Snapchat, in order to experiment with a large social media platform's attempt in utilizing a text supplement to exhibit emotions.

To begin with, Bitmoji was first developed by the Candanian company, Bitstrips. A bitmoji is a virtual character that is customized by a user to resemble the user; the online avatar is completely customizable and can be clothed in branded and non branded accessories. In the Summer of 2016, Snapchat bought the rights to Bitmoji with the plan of utilizing the virtual character platform for two reasons; integration of clothing and accessory brand deals and integration of a text supplement to show unrecognizable emotions. In these six examples of how I utilized my bitmoji in awkwardly sending my brother Snapchat text messages without any context, each bitmoji text shows a clear emotion. Additionally, a majority of those bitmoji texts were supplemented with texts to make the emotions even clearer. While cartoon-like virtual characters will not be appropriate for use in all situations, especially those of serious business exchanges, I value Snapchat’s efforts to make emotions more clearer. With technology expanding day by day, and face to face interactions becoming more limited, I believe that society is in significant need of a way to show emotions through text. Is Bitmoji the answer to this problem? I am not sure. However in the realm of recreational interactions, I had fun and benefited from bitmoji.
